Colaboración con el Laboratorio de Microbiología del doctor Alexander Tomasz en Rockefeller University en Nueva York
Collaboration with the Microbiology Laboratory of Dr. Alexander Tomasz at the Rockefeller University in Nueva York
The purpose of the collaboration was the molecular characterization of the penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates, initially using pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and later on, sequencing (Multi locus sequencing typing, MLST) to obtain some insights into the mechanisms of spread and possible origin of the resistant strains in Latin America.
These techniques have been widely used in the Region and have allowed to establish the genetic diversity of the isolates and the expansion of international clones and spread of minor clones in countries where studies were conducted. Two examples are, the study of clon Colombia5 ST289, and its presence in Latin American countries and more recently the studies of serotype 19A isolates.
